Application Description

Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) represent a fascinating chapter in the evolution of the bridge card game. Originating as the third step in this evolution from straight bridge, or bridge whist, Auction Bridge & IB serve as a direct precursor to the widely popular contract bridge. These games trace their lineage back through bridge whist and whist, showcasing a rich history of strategic card play.

One of the key distinctions of Auction Bridge & IB lies in their unique scoring system. Unlike contract bridge, these games feature radically different methods for trick scoring, bonus scoring, and penalty scoring. Notably, there is no concept of vulnerability in Auction Bridge & IB, setting it apart from its successor. Despite these differences, the selection of trumps follows a process similar to contract bridge, though with less complexity. The gameplay and rules also share similarities with contract bridge, providing a familiar yet distinct experience for players.

In Auction Bridge & IB, the dealer initiates the trump selection process and must commit to winning at least the odd trick in a chosen trump suit or at No-trumps. The bidding escalates not just by aiming for more tricks but by targeting higher point totals, disregarding doubles. For instance, a bid of 3 Spades (27 points) would outrank a bid of 4 Clubs (24 points).

Scoring in Auction Bridge & IB is based on the number of tricks taken beyond the first six. The points per trick vary by suit:

  • No-trumps: 10 points
  • Spades: 9 points
  • Hearts: 8 points
  • Diamonds: 7 points
  • Clubs: 6 points

The game is won by reaching a total of 30 points, making strategic play and bidding crucial elements of success.
