Marvel Comics is gearing up to relaunch its monthly Captain America series, featuring a fresh creative team and a compelling new story arc that delves into Steve Rogers' initial experiences post-suspended animation. This exciting new series will even showcase the very first clash between Captain America and Doctor Doom.

Announced at the ComicsPro retailer convention, the series will be penned by Chip Zdarsky, known for his work on Batman and Daredevil, and illustrated by Valerio Schiti, who has worked on G.O.D.S. and The Avengers. The vibrant colors will be brought to life by Frank D'Armata. This trio previously collaborated on the 2017 series Marvel 2-in-One, promising a seamless and dynamic storytelling experience.

The narrative kicks off shortly after Steve Rogers is revived in the modern Marvel era. Reenlisting in the US Army, his first mission involves teaming up with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate Latveria, which has been recently overtaken by a young and ambitious Doctor Doom. Although the series will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel Universe, the events of this initial story arc will significantly influence the ongoing narrative crafted by Zdarsky and Schiti.

“I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades. Writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight was a joy, so taking on the actual Captain America title feels like a dream come true!” Zdarsky stated. “We’re exploring Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I believe will truly surprise readers. I’m thrilled to bring this story to life, especially with Valerio and Frank’s incredible artwork!”

Zdarsky further elaborated, “I’ve approached this series with the same depth as my run on Daredevil, aiming to delve deep into Cap’s psyche and present a grounded, human perspective on who he is in this new world. Steve Rogers embodies the best of us, and I want that to shine through on every page.”

“Captain America is one of my all-time favorites,” Schiti shared. “Reuniting with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after our fantastic work on Marvel 2-In-One has been amazing, and I'm excited to contribute to a story that perfectly balances heart, action, and entertainment. What's most thrilling and unexpected is how much I've found myself focusing on Steve Rogers, the man, rather than just Captain America.”

Schiti added, “Chip’s script is both clever and compelling, ensuring readers will be drawn into Steve’s heart and soul. He’s the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. Having fought in a war against Nazism, ‘died,’ and then returned to continue his duty, he faces immense pressure. And remember, in the era we’re exploring, he’s only in his late twenties!”

Captain America #1 is set to hit the shelves on July 2, 2025.
