Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling exciting updates for Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming collaboration with Final Fantasy this summer. Over the weekend, during PAX East, the team showcased a substantial portion of the cards, including selections from both the main set and the Commander decks. Fans are delighted by the creative nods and even surprising inclusions from their beloved Final Fantasy titles.
The Universes Beyond series with Final Fantasy combines the traditional Commander format with a booster-based collection, offering an extensive array of cards to explore. The main set dives deep into the core numbered games of Final Fantasy, spanning from Final Fantasy I to XVI. On the other hand, the Commander Decks focus on four specific entries: Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV, each represented by iconic Commanders such as Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y’shtola.

Many of the reimagined Magic cards feature clever crossovers with Final Fantasy lore. For instance, Skullclamp draws inspiration from Final Fantasy VII’s Jenova project for its artwork.
Additionally, Together, Forever captures the emotional essence of Final Fantasy X, while several cards pay tribute to memorable character moments. Even lighter moments, such as Inspiring Call from Final Fantasy X, made the cut. Clever Concealment humorously references the Wall Market scene, complete with a fitting mechanic. Secret Rendezvous offers four distinct versions of the Golden Saucer date scene featuring Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.
Final Fantasy XIV enthusiasts have noticed numerous Easter eggs within the set, such as the Hildibrand Manderville card echoing the character’s antics. Archaeomancer’s Map even incorporates a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map. Fans have also enjoyed playful references like the Thancred card and customized flavor text for Rite of Replication.
Tome of Legends showcases a Wondrous Tails book with intricate details mirroring the in-game experience. While the Commander decks received significant attention, reveals like Commune With Beavers hint at intriguing adaptations from other Final Fantasy games.
Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy set releases on June 13, 2025, with pre-releases scheduled for the week before.
