NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29th, 2024. While the game will continue in Asia and some MENA regions, its closure in these territories marks the end of a journey that began with much promise.
Initially released in China in September 2021 and globally in June 2022, the game blended Clash Royale-style gameplay with the magical world of Harry Potter. Early success, fueled by engaging card battles and a strong Hogwarts atmosphere, couldn't sustain the game's long-term viability.
The game's decline is largely attributed to changes in the reward system. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration over a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics, nerfing skilled players' ability to progress without significant spending. This, coupled with slower progression for free-to-play users, ultimately led to the game's waning popularity.
The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions. However, players in other regions can still experience the dorm life, attend classes, uncover mysteries, and engage in wizarding duels.
