The new LEGO River Steamboat set is not just a stunning piece of art but also an engaging experience for builders. A set's quality is often judged by both its build process and its final result, and the River Steamboat exemplifies this perfectly. The build process has a logical and organic flow, with each step seamlessly leading to the next. The ship's layered design, where each floor is easily removable, ensures that all the intricate inner details are accessible and viewable. LEGO initially captured the adult audience with its modular buildings, and the River Steamboat follows suit as a modular boat, showcasing the same meticulous attention to detail that creates a cohesive and impressive whole.

Drawing inspiration from the grand paddle boats that once navigated the Mississippi River in the 1800s, the LEGO River Steamboat captures the essence of these historical vessels. Originally designed for industrial transport, these steamboats evolved into luxury pleasure boats featuring amenities and gambling. Even today, they offer entertainment, much like the riverboat cruise my wife and I enjoyed during our New Orleans honeymoon, filled with dining, dancing, and live jazz.
This set is a dream for LEGO enthusiasts. It includes a detailed jazz lounge and dining room, as well as functional areas like the boiler engine room connected to the paddle wheel. When you push the boat, the wheel turns, adding a dynamic element to the model. The pilothouse features a steering wheel that, when turned, moves the rudder at the bottom of the boat. Other practical elements include a kitchen, crew sleeping quarters, and an anchor on a chain that rolls up on a spool, along with rigging that raises and lowers the boarding stages on the ship's bow.
The build, consisting of 4,090 pieces, is thoughtfully organized into 32 separate bags. You begin with the ship's base, which houses the boiler room and a miniature nautical museum displaying various steam engines. The kitchen area on this level showcases LEGO's knack for minimalism and versatility, where a piece like a hot dog bun from another set becomes an engine reinforcement here.
Moving up, the main deck features a dining room and jazz lounge. The lounge, positioned over the stern, includes miniature LEGO accessories for a full band setup. The dining room, complete with tablecloths and elegant chairs, adds a touch of sophistication, with light fixtures and posters hinting at onboard entertainment. One poster even references another LEGO Ideas set, the A-Frame Cabin.
The dining room is built separately and then 'dropped' into place, creating an additional deck space for minifigures to enjoy the view. However, the set does not include any minifigures, perhaps signaling its focus on display rather than play.
Above the main deck, the crew deck houses sleeping quarters and a bathroom with all necessary amenities. The pilothouse is a marvel of engineering, with the steering wheel connected to the rudder through all four levels of the steamboat, showcasing the intricate planning and effort behind this feature.
The set is full of delightful details, such as repurposed croissant accessories turned into billowy flags, neatly lined railings, and patterned tiles that mimic rugs. Though the set feels more like 3,500 pieces due to its efficient design, the extra 500 pieces are well-justified by the detailed interiors and well-appointed rooms.
As William Strunk noted in The Elements of Style, "Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences..." The River Steamboat embodies this principle in LEGO form; every brick serves a purpose, every decorative element is essential, and each space contributes to the overall beauty of the ship. This set is a must-see for any LEGO aficionado.
LEGO River Steamboat, Set #21356, retails for $329.99 and consists of 4,090 pieces. It is available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
