Nexus Mods, a popular modding site, finds itself at the center of a heated debate after removing over 500 user-created modifications for the game Marvel Rivals in a single month. The controversy erupted when the site took down mods that replaced Captain America's head with images of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
The site's owner, known as TheDarkOne, addressed the situation on Reddit, clarifying that both mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of political bias. TheDarkOne stated, "We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason YouTube bloggers are silent about it.”
However, this action has not quelled the backlash. TheDarkOne revealed they have since been subjected to a barrage of online abuse, including death threats and accusations of pedophilia. "Today we write death threats, call us pedophiles and all sorts of insults just because someone decided to stir up this topic,” TheDarkOne added.
This isn't the first time Nexus Mods has faced criticism for removing user-generated content. A similar incident occurred in 2022, involving the removal of a Spider-Man Remastered mod that replaced rainbow flags with American flags. At that time, the site's owners publicly affirmed their commitment to inclusivity and their policy of removing content deemed discriminatory.
TheDarkOne concluded, “We're not going to waste our time on people who think this is cause for uproar.”
