In NieR:Automata, smaller swords boast impressive attack speeds and compact hitboxes, making them versatile weapons throughout the game. While weapon upgrades enhance their longevity, numerous powerful weapons, like the Type-40 sword, offer significant power boosts. However, obtaining the Type-40 sword requires completing a specific side quest chain.
Acquiring the Type-40 Sword:
The Type-40 sword is the reward for completing "Find a Present," the final quest in a series involving Operator 6O. To unlock this quest, you must first complete two preceding side quests. Here's a step-by-step guide, including chapter selection points:
- Post-Chapter 5: After defeating Adam and Eve in Chapter 5, Operator 6O will contact you. Complete the "Investigating Communications" quest immediately; it's easily missed.
- Chapter 6 & 7: Proceed through the main story, completing Chapter 6 (Forest Castle events) and initiating Chapter 7.
- "Terminal Repairs": After speaking with Pascal and inquiring about A2, explore the city ruins. Operator 6O will contact you again, directing you to check your inbox at an access point to begin the "Terminal Repairs" quest.
- "Find a Present": While returning to the Resistance Camp during Chapter 7, you'll receive a final message from Operator 6O about flowers. This message initiates the "Find a Present" quest.
- Reward: Upon completing "Find a Present," the Type-40 sword will be delivered to your inbox.

At level 1, the Type-40 sword performs a 5-hit light attack combo and a 3-hit heavy attack combo. Upgrading it to level 4 increases the light attack combo to 7 hits and enhances its effectiveness against stunned enemies. Titanium Alloy is required for these upgrades.
