Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice, Suggests New Evidence

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer an unconventional feature: mouse functionality. While the practicality of this mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The intriguing clue comes from Famiboards user LiC, known for uncovering Vietnamese customs data linked to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

LiC's latest discovery involves customs manifests detailing shipments of polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles"—the bottom component of a computer mouse—intended for "game console handles." Two model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced, and these are not found in public component databases, suggesting they may be unreleased products. The tape's reported size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this feature in its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic slider for improved surface movement.

The Legion GO also features magnetic controller rails—another rumored Switch 2 feature—offering a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
