Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Impact Canadian Pre-Orders

Author: Mila May 20,2025

Gamers worldwide expressed frustration last week when the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order date shifted from April 9 to an indefinite delay. This change came in response to import tariffs introduced by President Trump, causing financial markets to fluctuate, and the issue has now crossed into Canada. Nintendo Canada has confirmed that pre-orders in their region will also be postponed, dashing hopes of securing a console through cross-border purchases.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not commence on April 9, 2025, to align with the timing to be determined in the U.S.," stated Nintendo of Canada in a release to the Canadian tech outlet MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged."

This echoes a similar statement provided to IGN by Nintendo of America on April 4, though the Canadian announcement omits any direct reference to tariffs.

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, as Nintendo assesses the potential impact of tariffs and changing market conditions. The company will update pre-order timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains firm.

With the original pre-order date looming, gamers are left in a state of uncertainty, anxiously awaiting news on when they can begin their pre-order attempts and worried about potential price increases above the initially announced $449.99.

Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have already started in the UK, with smaller retailers like EE, GAME, and Smyths quickly selling out. Scalpers have taken to eBay, offering pre-orders for as much as £500 ($639), significantly higher than the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
