Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

The acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, Osmos, is back on Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated technology, developer Hemisphere Games has relaunched it with a completely revamped port.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning physics-based puzzle where you absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey yourself. Its simple yet engaging gameplay made it a hit, but Android users have been unable to enjoy it—until now.

Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos returns to Google Play with a modern, optimized port, finally playable on current Android devices. Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that initial Android development, done with Apportable, stalled after that studio closed, rendering the game unplayable on modern 64-bit systems. This new version is a complete rebuild.

If our enthusiastic reviews of Osmos (on both iOS and Android) and its numerous awards haven't convinced you, the gameplay trailer above should seal the deal. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless subsequent games. Its pre-social media release is almost a tragedy; it would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation today.

Osmos feels like a nostalgic gem, well worth revisiting. It represents a golden age of mobile gaming, a time many hope to see again. While Osmos stands out for its elegant design, there are many other excellent brain-teasers available on mobile.
