Universal Pictures has reportedly tapped Joseph Kosinski to helm a fresh Miami Vice film adaptation, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Nightcrawler filmmaker Dan Gilroy is scripting the project, building upon an early draft by Top Gun: Maverick scribe Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy recently contributed to multiple episodes of the acclaimed Star Wars spinoff Andor, a series developed by his brother Tony.

The original Miami Vice stands as a groundbreaking NBC police drama created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, airing five seasons from 1984 to 1989. Starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as stylish vice cops Crockett and Tubbs, the series revolutionized television aesthetics with its distinctive visuals, atmosphere, and soundtrack.

Michael Mann previously brought Miami Vice to theaters in 2006 with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell headlining the reboot.

While specifics remain scarce, Kosinski's involvement suggests Miami Vice won't be his immediate follow-up to June's F1 biopic, given his recent work on Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy.

The project timeline should at least afford Kosinski ample opportunity to secure the perfect Ferrari for production.
