Valve Slows Deadlock Updates, Prioritizing Stability

Deadlock 2025: Fewer, Bigger Updates from Valve

Valve has announced a shift in its update strategy for Deadlock in 2025, prioritizing larger, less frequent patches over the consistent smaller updates of 2024. This decision, communicated via the official Deadlock Discord, stems from challenges in maintaining the previous two-week update cycle. While this might disappoint some players anticipating constant content, it promises more substantial updates with a greater impact.

Deadlock, Valve's free-to-play MOBA-style hero shooter, launched on Steam earlier in 2024 following leaked gameplay. It quickly gained traction, establishing itself in a competitive market including titles like Marvel Rivals. Deadlock's distinct steampunk aesthetic and refined gameplay have contributed to its success. However, to optimize development, Valve will adjust its update cadence.

According to a statement from Valve developer Yoshi, the fixed two-week update schedule proved problematic. The shorter cycles hindered internal iteration and didn't always allow sufficient time for external feedback before the next update. The new approach will feature larger, event-style patches released on a less frequent basis, supplemented by hotfixes as needed.

Deadlock's recent winter update showcased this shift, introducing unique gameplay changes instead of the usual balance adjustments. This suggests a future incorporating more limited-time events and special modes. The game currently boasts 22 playable characters across various roles, plus eight additional heroes in its Hero Labs mode. Its anti-cheat measures and character diversity have also garnered praise.

While an official release date remains unannounced, Valve intends to share further Deadlock news in 2025. The focus on larger, more impactful updates signals a commitment to refining and expanding the game experience.
