Palace, also known as Shed, Karma, or "OG," is a classic card game that dominated study halls and cafeterias during my high school days in the 90s. Its popularity extends beyond school grounds, being a favorite among backpackers and thus widely recognized around the world.
In response to user feedback, the latest version of Palace introduces new options such as the ability to pick up from the pile at any time and the rule where a 7 forces players to play a lower card. Additionally, you can now enjoy the game with friends, enhancing the social aspect of this timeless pastime.
You can challenge eight different computer characters, each with unique playing styles, or engage in live matches with your friends. This variety keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting.
Basic Rules:
To start, each player is dealt three 'face down cards' which remain unseen and untouched until the game's end. On top of these, three 'face up cards' are placed. Finally, players receive three cards to form their initial hand. You have the option to swap cards between your hand and your face up cards before the game begins.
The player with a 3, or the next lowest card if no one has a 3, kicks off the game. During your turn, you must discard a card (or multiple cards of the same rank) that is equal to or higher than the card at the top of the pick-up pile. After discarding, you draw cards from the deck to ensure you have at least three cards in your hand, unless the deck is depleted or you already hold three or more cards.
Wild cards add a twist to the gameplay: 2's reset the pile, while 10's and four of a kind clear it. If you can't play a card equal to or higher than the top card on the pile, nor do you have a wild card, you must pick up the entire pile.
Once your hand is empty and the deck is exhausted, you move on to playing your face up cards. When those are gone, you play your face down cards. The first player to discard all their cards wins the game.
