Phom, also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho, is a beloved card game deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture, particularly popular in the northern regions. Known as Ta La in the South and Phom in the North, this game is a staple at social gatherings and family reunions, offering both entertainment and a chance to connect with others.

In Phom, players strategize to collect and discard cards with the aim of forming sets called "phom." These sets can be sequences of three or more cards of the same suit or groups of three cards with the same value. Cards that do not form part of any phom are considered "junk cards." The ultimate goal is to minimize the total score of junk cards.

The game uses a standard 52-card deck and offers a variety of playing styles, enhancing its appeal. Key terms include:

• Phom: A set of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three cards of the same value.
• Junk cards: Cards that do not belong to any phom.
• Ù: Achieved when a player forms three phoms, leaving no junk cards, resulting in an absolute win.
• Stomach: The remaining cards after dealing, placed in the middle of the table.
• Mom: When a player cannot form any phom at the end of the game.
• Take the pin: In the final turn, playing a junk card that another player can use.
• Send: In the last turn, if a junk card can be added to another player's phom, it can be "sent" and will not count against the sender at the end.
• Compensation: In the last turn, if a player takes another's pin and then another player achieves Ù, the player who took the pin receives compensation. Additionally, three consecutive cards also count as compensation.
• Re: After playing cards, if another player plays, the played cards are transferred, allowing an extra turn.

How to Play Phom - Ta La

• Players: The game accommodates 2 to 4 players. Each player receives 9 cards, while the dealer or winner gets 10. The remaining cards form the "stomach" and are placed face down in the center.
• Gameplay: The game proceeds counterclockwise, starting with the player who has 10 cards. Each player can either take a card played by the previous player to form a phom or draw from the stomach. After drawing, the player discards one card, and the cycle continues.
• End of Game: The game ends when a player achieves Ù. If no one achieves Ù, the game concludes after four rounds, and the winner is determined by the lowest score of junk cards.

Scoring System

• Card Values: A, J, Q, K are scored as 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively. Other cards are scored according to their face value.
• Winner Determination: The player with the lowest score of junk cards wins. In case of a tie, the player who discards first wins.
• Final Score Calculation:
  • First place: +6 points
  • Second place: -1 point
  • Third place: -2 points
  • Last place: -3 points
  • Taking the pin: -4 points
  • Giving the pin: +4 points
  • Achieving Ù or Ù Khan: +15 points (each other player loses 5 points)
  • Burned/Burnt: Loses 4 points to the winner
