Gordang Sambilan is a traditional art form of the Batak Mandailing tribe. The term "Gordang" means drum or large drum, while "Sambilan" means nine. This ensemble consists of nine drums or large drums, each varying in length and diameter, thus producing different tones. Gordang Sambilan is typically played by six individuals, with the smallest drums, numbers 1 and 2, known as taba-taba; drum 3 as tepe-tepe; drum 4 as kudong-kudong; drum 5 as kudong-kudong nabalik; drum 6 as pasilion; and drums 7, 8, and 9 as jangat. Originally, Gordang Sambilan was performed only during sacred events. However, as social culture has evolved, it is now commonly played at weddings, to welcome guests, and during major celebrations. As a cherished part of Indonesia's cultural heritage, Gordang Sambilan has even been performed at the presidential palace.
