Euchre uses a 24-card deck. Play happens in teams of two.

When a player names trump (by ordering up), their team commits to winning most tricks that hand. Score one point for taking three or four tricks, and two points for taking all five. Failing to win three tricks is called getting "euchred," and the other team gets two points.

If a caller has an exceptionally strong hand, they can "go alone." In this case, the caller’s partner sits out, and the caller attempts to win all five tricks solo. Success scores four points. Taking three or four tricks while alone scores one point. Getting euchred while playing alone still gives the opposing team two points.

The key rule to remember is that you are never forced to play a trump card (unless it's the led suit), but you must follow suit if you can.
