According to recent reports, Bethesda is expected to announce a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the coming weeks, with a release following shortly after.
NatetheHate, who accurately predicted the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement date, tweeted that the Oblivion remake will be unveiled either this month or next—a claim VGC has confirmed.
The launch timeline is a bit less certain. NatetheHate suggested a release before June, while VGC indicated it could arrive as early as April.
Last January, Mp1st covered details about the Oblivion remake that were apparently leaked by a former Virtuos employee. Microsoft did not comment when IGN reached out for a statement.
Per Mp1st, Virtuos rebuilt Bethesda’s beloved open-world RPG in Unreal Engine 5, pointing to a full remake rather than a simple remaster. Gameplay adjustments were also mentioned, such as improvements to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD).
As Mp1st reported, the Blocking system was redesigned to emulate action titles and Soulslikes, since the original felt too “boring” and “frustrating.” Sneak indicators are now highlighted, with a revised damage model. Knockdowns from Stamina depletion are now tougher to trigger. The HUD was also revamped for better clarity. In addition, hit reactions were implemented for more immediate feedback, and archery was modernized across both first-person and third-person views.

Rumors of an Oblivion remaster surfaced in 2023, when documents from the FTC v. Microsoft trial over the Activision Blizzard acquisition listed several unannounced Bethesda games planned for future release. The list, compiled in July 2020 before Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, included the following:
FY2022:
Oblivion RemasterIndiana Jones Project
FY2023:
Doom Year Zero + DLCProject KestrelProject Platinum
FY2024:
The Elder Scrolls 6Project Kestrel ExpansionLicensed IP TitleFallout 3 RemasterGhostwire: Tokyo SequelDishonored 3DOOM Year Zero DLC
Many of these titles were either postponed or canceled. Doom Year Zero is now Doom: The Dark Ages, set for a May launch. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle didn’t arrive until December 2024. The Elder Scrolls 6, of course, was nowhere near a 2024 launch.
Today, however, all eyes are on the Oblivion project. It's worth noting the Microsoft documents called it a remaster, suggesting the scope may have since expanded into a full remake. We'll know for sure once Bethesda officially reveals what has become one of gaming’s worst-kept secrets.
In terms of platforms, where will the Oblivion remake launch? Microsoft has shifted focus to multiplatform publishing, and with the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, Oblivion could arrive not only on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation—but also on Nintendo’s next system. If the Switch 2 releases around June, Oblivion might even land within its launch window.
