Nintendo Switch 2 Game Card: First Look

Author: Claire Dec 02,2025

Nintendo has given us our first official look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge ahead of the console's launch next month.

The latest video from the company's Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, which includes slots to securely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 game cards.

As previously known, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as Switch 1 cartridges—ensuring the Switch 2 console only requires one slot to play games from both console generations. However, there's one notable distinction: the color of the cartridge.

Switch 2 cartridges are red—and this color choice appears to be standard across all titles, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in Nintendo's video. (For those without the Nintendo Today app, you can view the video via OatmealDome on X/Twitter below.)

The top of the cartridge's printed design sticker also displays a Switch 2 logo, replacing the Nintendo Switch branding found on original cartridges.

Apart from these changes, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical in other aspects, including the unpleasant-tasting coating that Nintendo applies to deter users from putting them in their mouths.

"We want to prevent any risk of accidental ingestion," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta previously explained to GameSpot. "We've designed it so that if it goes into your mouth, you'll instinctively spit it out."

The Switch 2 is scheduled to launch on June 5, 2025—just three weeks from now. Earlier today, a report indicated that Nintendo's key electronics partner, Samsung, is already considering a hardware revision for the Switch 2 featuring an OLED screen upgrade.
