PlayStation 5 users who have finished Death Stranding 2: On the Beach have spotted a surprising mention in the game's credits: Nintendo.
The credit specifically names Nintendo Pictures, the motion capture studio Nintendo purchased and rebranded in 2022.
This marks the first time Nintendo Pictures has been credited for work on a non-Nintendo title since its acquisition, though there's a straightforward explanation.
Development of Death Stranding 2 was well underway in 2022 when Nintendo acquired the studio, previously known as Dynamo Pictures. The game’s reveal trailer at The Game Awards 2022 included early scenes with Norman Reedus and Lea Seydoux that appear to have used motion capture technology.
It is likely that Nintendo Pictures (at the time Dynamo Pictures) was contracted for the project prior to the acquisition and continued its work as planned. The studio had previously contributed to the original Death Stranding, suggesting an early involvement in the sequel.
Staff from Nintendo Pictures credited in Death Stranding 2 include a motion capture director, multiple motion capture editors, motion capture coordinators, and a motion capture advisor.
Since the acquisition, Nintendo Pictures has primarily focused on Nintendo-owned projects like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Pikmin 4, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Whether the studio will collaborate on external titles in the future remains uncertain.
