Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a significant leap into virtual reality (VR) with an exclusive release on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality gaming, a development eagerly anticipated by fans.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Comments

The February 8th, 2025 Civ World Summit Event brought the exciting news: Civ VII VR will be a Meta Quest exclusive. 2K Games and Firaxis Games celebrated this launch, with Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressing enthusiasm for a "new era of strategy excellence." Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, highlighted the timing, emphasizing the strong Meta Quest 3S portfolio and the game's suitability for dedicated strategy players. While Civ VII is launching on various consoles, a PSVR2 release is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR offers a unique gameplay experience. Players will interact with the game world from a "Command Table," allowing for both a broad overview and detailed examination of units and buildings, reminiscent of a physical board game. The game supports both immersive VR and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between them. 2K describes the VR experience as being set in an ornate museum, while the mixed reality version adapts to the player's physical space.

The game features single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, supporting up to four players using Meta Quest headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. The VR/MR experience extends to multiplayer, allowing players to see each other as their chosen leaders around the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires 2K and Meta accounts.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback received during Civ VII's early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team acknowledges concerns regarding the User Interface (UI), particularly its impact on accessibility of key information. Planned improvements include UI enhancements for better intuitiveness and map readability, as well as addressing formatting and other polish issues.

Future updates will also incorporate community-requested features, such as multiplayer teams and expanded map variety. A quality-of-life update scheduled for March will focus on UI adjustments, AI improvements, diplomacy and crisis refinements, and bug fixes.

Civ VII VR's Spring 2025 release date remains unspecific. Meanwhile, Civ VII is available in early access and launches worldwide on February 11th, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. For more details, visit our Civilization VII page.
