Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is gearing up for an exciting movie adaptation, with acclaimed director Michael Bay and actress Sydney Sweeney attached to the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has tapped Bay, known for his work on the Transformers series, to direct and produce the upcoming OutRun film. Sweeney, who is also set to produce, joins the team alongside screenwriter Jayson Rothwell, though plot details remain under wraps and no release date has been announced yet.
On the Sega front, the project will be steered by Toru Nakahara, a producer involved with the successful Sonic movies, with Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi overseeing the film's development. OutRun, originally launched in 1986, was a visually stunning arcade driving game crafted by legendary Sega developer Yu Suzuki. Over the years, the game has seen various versions and ports, with a sequel released in 2003. The most recent iteration was OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009, indicating that the franchise has been relatively quiet in recent times.
Sega, however, continues to mine its rich catalog for new projects, with upcoming games such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi currently in development. The company has also been successful with adaptations of its intellectual property, notably with the popular Sonic movie series and the recent Like a Dragon: Yakuza series on Amazon. Hollywood's appetite for video game adaptations is stronger than ever, evidenced by the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the upcoming A Minecraft Movie.
As for the direction of the OutRun movie, fans might speculate that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney could be envisioning a high-octane, action-packed film akin to the Fast & Furious franchise, blending thrilling driving sequences with blockbuster action.
