Butterfly Spy Thriller Led by Daniel Dae Kim Sets Release Date

IGN can exclusively debut the first-look images for Prime Video's Butterfly and confirm that all six episodes of this spy-thriller series starring Daniel Dae Kim will premiere on August 13, 2025.

Kim, known for his roles in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Lost, and Hawaii Five-0, will also executive produce the show, which features Reina Hardesty (The Secret Art of Human Flight), Piper Perabo (Yellowstone), and Louis Landau (Rivals).

Butterfly on Prime Video is adapted from the BOOM! Studios graphic novel series by Arash Amel, presenting a character-driven spy thriller that delves into family relationships amid the dangerous realm of global espionage.

The story follows David Jung (Kim), a mysterious and unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative based in South Korea, whose life shatters when the fallout from a past impossible decision resurfaces. He becomes the target of Rebecca (Hardesty), a ruthless, sociopathic young agent ordered to eliminate him, along with Caddis, the shadowy spy syndicate she works for.

“Butterfly fulfills a long-term vision to unite American and Korean storytellers in a series that connects two cultures I hold dear,” Kim shared. “I’m thrilled with the creative team we’ve built, both on screen and behind the scenes, and thankful to Ken Woodruff, Boom! Ken Woodruff of The Mentalist and Gotham serves as showrunner and co-creator with celebrated novelist Steph Cha. Additional cast members include Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo, Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell, Sean Dulake, and Nayoon Kim, with Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa in guest appearances.

Executive producers alongside Kim include Woodruff and Cha, John Cheng for 3AD, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for BOOM! Studios, and Arash Amel for The Amel Company.
