James Gunn: DCU's Superman Could Kill if Forced

One of the most enduring debates in superhero lore asks: would Superman ever take a life? In the DCEU, Henry Cavill's Superman was forced to kill General Zod as an absolute last resort to save innocent people. But would David Corenswet's iteration of the Man of Steel make the same choice in James Gunn's rebooted DCU?

This new Superman film presents a more hopeful and bright-toned world compared to the grounded, naturalistic SnyderVerse. The movie clearly shows Superman's profound respect for all life—human, animal, and alien. For some viewers, this naturally leads to the question: why is Superman so opposed to killing?

In a Wired interview, David Corenswet shared his perspective, aligning with the classic understanding of the character: "I believe the core reason is that he sees the potential for good in nearly everyone, perhaps even to a fault," the actor explained. "He finds redeeming qualities even in those who wish to harm him."

DCU architect James Gunn added his thoughts in the same video: "Superman operates on a fundamental belief in the right to life. Taking that away simply isn't in his nature."

Gunn clarified, however, that this Superman is not an absolute pacifist. "I don't take a purist stance on this. If he were left with no other choice—for instance, to protect someone's life—he would do it, though it would weigh heavily on him."
