Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Standalone Status

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signal the end of the character's journey. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes despite the character's keen interest in joining the Avengers, as depicted in the successful Deadpool & Wolverine film.

The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month featured a strong presence of veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. Grammer, known for portraying Beast, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, who played Charles Xavier/Professor X, has also appeared in the MCU through Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, McKellen, Cumming, Romijn, and Marsden are yet to make their MCU appearances. This heavy inclusion of X-Men actors has led to speculation that Avengers: Doomsday might be a covert Avengers vs. X-Men movie.

Despite the excitement around Avengers: Doomsday, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the confirmed list of stars, which did include Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds hinted that a surprise cameo as Deadpool might be more fitting, citing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for Deadpool's future, Reynolds mentioned he is currently writing something new that involves an "ensemble," but remained tight-lipped about the details. This could suggest another Deadpool film featuring numerous cameos, potentially including characters like Snipes' Blade and Tatum's Gambit, as well as Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23.
