In a surprising turn of events, Helldivers 2 is set to launch on Xbox Series X and S next month, marking a significant move as Sony publishes a major title on its rival's platform.
A recent livestream confirmed that Arrowhead's intense cooperative third-person shooter will debut on Xbox on August 26, 2025. Notably, this coincides with the release of Microsoft's Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5.
Helldivers 2 Game Director Mikael Eriksson shared his thoughts on this milestone in a post on Xbox Wire.
"We've heard the community's calls for this release and are thrilled to welcome more soldiers to the fight for Super Earth," he stated. "Our plans for expanding the universe are extensive, and a larger player base allows for richer storytelling. This is just the beginning of our galactic campaign."
Full cross-platform play has been confirmed, enabling seamless multiplayer sessions between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox users.
Since its February 2024 debut on PC and PS5, Helldivers 2 has emerged as Sony's most successful live-service title, setting a new record as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game with 12 million copies sold in its first 12 weeks.
While Steam charts continue to show robust player engagement a year and a half after launch, the Xbox release is expected to significantly expand the active community.
The Xbox version represents a strategic shift for Sony, which traditionally reserves its first-party titles for PlayStation consoles and PC. The exception has been MLB The Show, developed by Sony's San Diego Studio but published under the MLB license. Sony's recent release of LEGO Horizon Adventures on Nintendo Switch further demonstrates this evolving approach.
This development signals a broader industry trend toward dissolving platform exclusivity. Microsoft's simultaneous release of formerly Xbox-exclusive franchises on PlayStation—including Gears of War: Reloaded, August's Hellblade 2, and October's The Outer Worlds 2—complements this new era of cross-platform accessibility.
