Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Set for April 2, 2025

Ending months of speculation and insider leaks, Nintendo has unveiled its next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement came via a concise teaser trailer released on Thursday, January 16, showcasing a refined design that preserves the hybrid functionality of the original Switch.

The trailer highlighted the Switch 2’s design, maintaining its predecessor’s hybrid essence while introducing key upgrades. It features a larger display and a sturdier, wider kickstand. The Joy-Cons have been revamped, now attaching magnetically to the console, moving away from the original rail system. An additional USB-C port on the console was also confirmed.

Backward compatibility is a key feature. Nintendo stated that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will be playable on the Switch 2, though some titles may not be fully supported. Details on unsupported games will be shared later on Nintendo’s website. Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online functionality will seamlessly transfer to the new console, ensuring continuity for subscribers.

No exclusive titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 have been confirmed yet. The teaser hinted at a potential Mario Kart 9, following the success of Mario Kart 8, but this remains unverified. Reports also suggest Gotham Knights might arrive on the Switch 2, though neither Nintendo nor Warner Bros. Games has confirmed this. Nintendo Switch 2 Hands-On Events Begin April 2025

Nintendo is hosting Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events in major cities worldwide, offering fans a chance to try the console before its official release.

Per Nintendo’s press release, ticket registration for these events opens on January 17, 2025, at 12:00 P.M. PT / 2:00 P.M. CT / 3:00 P.M. ET and closes on January 26, 2025, at 11:59 P.M. local time for each location. Attendees will be selected randomly, with notifications sent shortly after. A Nintendo Account is required to participate.
