Following the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' historic decision to introduce an Oscar for Stunt Design, actor Tom Hardy has raised concerns about whether a single award category suffices.
In conversation with IGN prior to his new film Havoc's release, Hardy shared: "A single Oscar feels somewhat inadequate at this stage. While it's undoubtedly positive progress, I believe the recognition should extend further."
"Stunt design alone doesn't encompass the full scope," explained the star of Venom and Mad Max: Fury Road. "It serves as an umbrella term for numerous specialized disciplines that deserve acknowledgment - from horseback riding to vehicle stunts, fire effects to high falls. These professionals risk their safety to create the thrills audiences love in cinema and television."
Havoc director Gareth Evans, renowned for his groundbreaking action sequences in The Raid films, shares this perspective. "Additional subcategories would be meaningful," he notes. "While awards aren't the primary motivation for stunt work, this overdue recognition finally validates their artistry."
The Academy Awards will introduce the stunt design category at the 2028 ceremony - a full century after the Oscars' inception. For those eager to see Hardy's latest action-packed performance, Havoc premieres on Netflix this Friday, April 25th.
