Talempong Pacik and Tambua Tansa: The Art of Minang

Among the enduring traditional arts are tambua tansa, the piriang dance (including the dramatic version on broken glass), randai, saluang, talempong, the rice-stem pupuik, and the art of sprouts.

Tambua Tansa, in particular, is a staple of community celebrations. Its presence even enlivens many official government ceremonies.

While Tambua Tansa is practiced throughout the nagari (villages) of Agam Regency, it is most prevalent in the Lake Maninjau and Lubuk Basung districts.

The Tansa is a smaller drum, played with two special rattan sticks. It acts as the conductor for the Tambua ensemble. The dancer leading the group is also the leader, dictating the songs and rhythms to be performed.

The Tambua itself is crafted from specific hollowed-out wood. They vary in size. Larger ones, about 50 to 60 cm in diameter, are called Tambadang Gadang. Smaller ones, 25 to 30 cm across, are known as Tambua Kaciak (little drum). A typical group features 6 to 12 tambua.

Tambua Tansa serves to gather communities. It is commonly used for events like gotong royong (communal work) for road construction or building public facilities.

Typically, the group or village leader plays the tambua tansa at the worksite in the morning. Its thunderous call ensures people quickly assemble for their communal duty.

Once work begins, the Tambua Tansa continues to energize the laborers. Its lively rhythms, accompanied by the sound of the rice-stem pupuik and workers' cheers, make the toil and heat feel less burdensome.

During wedding feasts, Tambua Tansa is essential for creating a vibrant atmosphere. The celebration would feel incomplete without its powerful roar.

Tambua Tansa is also used to welcome honored guests, such as during official visits to the nagari by regents, deputy regents, police chiefs, governors, district heads, and other dignitaries.
