Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces a robust transmogging system, allowing players to retain weapon stats while customizing their appearance to their liking. Dive deeper into what the game offers in terms of progression and customization.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Provides A Deep Dive on Progression
Transmogging and Weapon Customization
Assassin’s Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) offers a comprehensive look at player progression, featuring a detailed transmog system. On March 1, 2025, AC Shadows shared an in-depth explanation on their website about how players can customize their weapons and progress through the game. Julien, the Associate Game Director, outlined the team's vision for the game's customizability.
The transmog feature enables players to alter the appearance of their weapons while maintaining their original stats. This allows players to keep the stats of a weapon they prefer but change its look to match their style. To unlock this feature, players need to build a Forge in the Hideout, accessible directly from the inventory menu.
Julien noted, "The Forge is central to managing your inventory. It's where you can upgrade or dismantle weapons and gear. We'll cover more about the Hideout in an upcoming article." Players can also mix and match different parts of weapons, such as combining the blade of one weapon with the guard of another and the handle of a third.
New Progression Loop
Previously, at IGN Fan Fest 2025, Creative Director Charles Benoit discussed the game’s combat mechanics and progression. In the latest update, Ubisoft provided a detailed look at the player progression system and its mechanics.
Julien discussed the challenge of having two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, saying, "Having two characters with distinct archetypes in our feudal Japan setting led us to rethink our approach to player progression." She added, "Our aim was to adhere closely to the philosophy of mastery and martial arts."
Mastery, Abilities, and Knowledge Ranks
AC Shadows introduces unique mastery trees for its protagonists, Naoe, the shinobi and assassin, and Yasuke, the samurai. Julien explained, "The Mastery trees allow players to focus on a specific weapon, playstyle, or archetype, deepening their mastery." She continued, "Points invested in the Mastery tree unlock additional bonuses, enhancing your progress."
Abilities within the Mastery trees provide new gameplay mechanics and increased damage. However, some abilities and points are only accessible once players reach certain levels in their Knowledge Rank. This can be achieved through non-violent activities like finding Lost Pages in temples, praying at Shrines, performing Kuji-kiri Meditation for Naoe, or learning new Kata for Yasuke.
Customizing Your Playstyle
AC Shadows allows players to tailor their playstyle through various customization options. Perks enable players to "modify, enhance, or specialize a piece of equipment," offering stat improvements, afflictions, or unique conditions that encourage diverse playstyles.
Despite their initial archetypes, Naoe and Yasuke can be played in varied ways. The game provides potential builds for each character, showcasing the depth of customization available. Naoe can adopt an exotic combat style, focusing on ground attacks for quick engagement and disengagement. Yasuke can be built for stealth and ranged combat, with perks and abilities enhancing his stealth and archery skills.
With the excitement building over the past few weeks, fans eagerly await the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a game they've long anticipated.
