Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently addressed a controversy sparked by a moderator's stance on AI-generated art within the game's subreddit. The issue came to light when DrTankHead, a former moderator of both the main and NSFW Balatro subreddits, announced that AI art would not be banned as long as it was properly labeled. This statement, which DrTankHead claimed was made after discussions with Playstack, the game's publisher, stirred significant debate among the community.

In response, Localthunk took to Bluesky to clarify their position, stating that neither they nor Playstack condone AI-generated imagery. They further elaborated on the Balatro subreddit, emphasizing their opposition to AI "art" and its potential harm to artists. Localthunk confirmed that DrTankHead had been removed from the moderation team and announced a new policy prohibiting AI-generated images on the subreddit, with forthcoming updates to the rules and FAQ to reflect this stance.

Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the previous rules regarding AI content could have been clearer, admitting that the phrasing might have suggested an acceptance of AI art. The remaining moderators plan to refine the language to prevent future misunderstandings.

DrTankHead, now removed from the main Balatro subreddit's moderation team, addressed the situation on the NSFW Balatro subreddit. They clarified that while they do not intend to make the NSFW subreddit focused on AI art, they are considering designated days for posting non-NSFW AI-generated artwork. This proposal received mixed reactions, with one user suggesting that DrTankHead take a break from Reddit.

The controversy surrounding AI-generated art in Balatro is part of a broader conversation within the gaming and entertainment industries. These sectors have faced significant layoffs, and the integration of AI has raised ethical concerns, rights issues, and questions about the quality of AI-generated content. For example, Keywords Studios' attempt to create a game entirely using AI failed, highlighting AI's limitations in replacing human talent.

Despite these challenges, major tech companies continue to invest heavily in AI. EA has positioned AI at the core of its business, while Capcom is exploring generative AI to generate ideas for in-game environments. Activision also admitted to using AI for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, following backlash over an AI-generated zombie Santa loading screen.

This ongoing debate underscores the complex relationship between AI technology and creative industries, as stakeholders navigate the balance between innovation and the preservation of artistic integrity.
