Destiny 2's Prophecy Year: Key Details for Guardians

Author: Henry May 31,2025

Guardians, prepare yourselves — Bungie has just revealed what’s on the horizon for its beloved sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2. This year, titled the "Year of Prophecy," brings two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates, accessible to both paying and free players alike. For the first time ever, this year features four major content milestones, combining paid expansions with free updates.

Leading the charge is Rite of the Nine, offering a fresh twist on dungeon exploration for both veterans and newcomers. Available to all players at no extra cost, this expansion revisits familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, but with unique surprises. Guardians will reconnect with old friends like Orin and enjoy refreshed dungeon weapons.

On July 15, the highly anticipated expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches. This multiyear saga unfolds over several expansions and reintroduces the enigmatic Nine, powerful entities predating the Traveler. Two characters take center stage: the new ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora. Set on the mysterious Kepler, inspired by the puzzle-solving and exploration challenges of previous dungeons, players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Also launching on July 15, major core game innovations arrive, including revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced build crafting. Additionally, a new activity selection screen called the Portal introduces Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and Solo Ops, catering to different playstyles. Fifty new modifiers deepen gameplay customization, while curated activity rotations keep things fresh.

Pre-orders for The Edge of Fate come with enticing bonuses, such as an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Other editions offer additional rewards, including ships, snipers, and more. On September 9, the Ash & Iron update goes live, followed by the Renegades expansion on December 2, and the Shadow & Order update on March 3.

Inspired by the Star Wars universe, Renegades blends Destiny’s signature storytelling with iconic sci-fi themes. This expansion marks a significant milestone following Bungie’s recent layoffs, which saw 220 employees let go in July 2024, just months after 100 others were dismissed.

Beyond Destiny 2, Bungie is also focusing on Marathon, a reboot of its classic franchise. With the first hands-on preview revealing promising PvP mechanics, fans eagerly await its release in September.
