Original Frostpunk Remade Using The Unreal Engine
Frostpunk's creators, 11 bit Studios, surprised fans with an unexpected reveal on April 24 via Twitter (X). They introduced Frostpunk 1886, a reimagined version of the beloved original, now powered by the Unreal Engine.
The announcement promised a fresh Purpose Path, much-anticipated mod support, and a host of other enhancements while honoring the essence of the initial release. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, the studio elaborated on their ambitious vision for this project.
Transitioning from their proprietary Liquid Engine, used for the first game, to the Unreal Engine, which powered Frostpunk 2, 11 bit Studios saw an opportunity to enrich the original game. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they declared.
Eyeing A 2027 Release

Currently in development, Frostpunk 1886 is set to launch in 2027. This project aims to serve as an excellent entry point for new players into the Frostpunk universe, while simultaneously offering a delightful revisit for long-time fans, designed to be enjoyed time and time again.
Looking ahead, 11 bit Studios plans to introduce entirely new content through potential DLCs. Their strategy is to increase the frequency of their game releases, beginning with Frostpunk 1886. In the interim, fans can look forward to Frostpunk 2, its major free update scheduled for May 8, a console release this summer, and more, as outlined in their roadmap.
