Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat: Phone Number Verification Required

Author: Caleb May 25,2025

Setting up the GameChat feature on the Nintendo Switch 2 involves an essential step: verifying your identity with a phone number. Whether you're linking a new number or using one already connected to your Nintendo Account, you'll receive a text message to confirm your setup. This verification process ties your GameChat activities to your phone number, ensuring a secure and responsible environment.

It's crucial to note that if you're under 16, GameChat access will be restricted until a parent or guardian enables it through the Parental Controls smart device app. They'll also need to provide their phone number for text message verification, adding an extra layer of security for younger users.

According to information found on Nintendo's website, as reported by Eurogamer, it appears that all Nintendo Account users on the Switch 2 will need to go through this phone number verification process, even if the console is shared among multiple players. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for further clarification on this matter.

Accessing GameChat on the Switch 2 is straightforward. Simply press the new 'C' button on the console's controllers to initiate a video or audio call. Up to four players can join a video chat, while a group audio call can accommodate up to 24 participants. During a video call, you can broadcast yourself using a separately sold camera peripheral and stream your gameplay, marking a significant step for Nintendo in enhancing the social gaming experience.

Recent insights from Digital Foundry have shed light on the potential performance impact of GameChat on the Nintendo Switch 2. The tech experts disclosed that GameChat has a "significant impact" on the system's resources, raising concerns among developers. Nintendo offers a GameChat testing tool to simulate API latency and L3 cache misses, allowing developers to test their games' performance without needing active GameChat sessions.

The question remains whether GameChat will affect game performance for users. If GameChat resources are within the system's allocation, there should be no difference in performance. However, the provision of emulation tools by Nintendo suggests that there might be some impact that developers need to account for. As Digital Foundry noted, "We'll be interested to see how GameChat may (or may not) impact game performance as this does seem to be an area of developer concern." The true effect will only be known when the Switch 2 launches on June 5.

Remember, GameChat will be free for the first 10 months after the Switch 2's release. After March 31, 2026, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required to continue using GameChat.

In other news, we've had our first look at a Switch 2 game cartridge, and there's buzz that Samsung is interested in supplying OLED screens for a potential Switch 2 upgrade.
