To parry in Avowed, you first need to unlock the ability. Navigate to the menu, head to the “Abilities” screen, and select the “Ranger” tab. You'll find the Parry ability in the middle column at the top. To unlock it, you must first allocate an Ability point into any of the three core trees. Once that's done, you can unlock Parry.
There are three ranks of Parry, detailed in the table below for your convenience:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Level Description |
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks Parry. |
2 | Player Level 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun when Parrying enemies. |
3 | Player Level 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies. |
Additionally, at level 10, you can unlock “Arrow Deflection,” allowing you to block arrows and other projectiles by parrying.
How to Parry Attacks in Avowed
To parry in Avowed, you must time your block just before an enemy’s attack hits you. You’ll hear a distinctive metal clanking sound and see a visual indicator as the enemy reels from your parry. The timing can take some practice, varying slightly between enemies. It’s not as challenging to master as in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, but practice will still be your best friend.
Parrying Isn’t Always an Option
It's important to note that not all attacks can be parried. Look out for a red circle, which indicates an unparriable attack that you'll need to dodge.
Also, not all weapons in Avowed can parry. Generally, single-handed and two-handed weapons can, but only if they're not in your off-hand. If you have a shield in your off-hand, you can use it to parry. However, ranged weapons like guns, wands, bows, and grimoires cannot parry.
What Parrying Does (& Why You Might Want to Do It)
Parrying in Avowed is an excellent way to stun your attacker, causing them to stagger and allowing you to deal significant damage. It’s a crucial technique for avoiding damage while enhancing your offensive capabilities.
The effectiveness of parrying depends on your character build. It's particularly beneficial for melee characters who engage enemies up close. If your build focuses on ranged attacks, you might not need to invest in parry. However, for melee fighters, it’s a highly valuable ability. Fortunately, Avowed makes it easy and affordable to respec, so if you find parry isn’t for you, you can always change your abilities later.
And that’s how to Parry in Avowed.
