Mastering Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Obedience Mechanic: A Comprehensive Guide

Obedience in Pokémon has evolved since the first generation, and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet introduces key differences. This guide clarifies how obedience works in Gen 9, the impact of Gym Badges, and the role of the Original Trainer (OT).

Understanding Pokémon Obedience in Gen 9

Unlike previous generations, a Pokémon's obedience in Scarlet & Violet is determined by its level at the time of capture. Pokémon caught at level 20 or below will always obey your commands. Pokémon caught above level 20 will be disobedient until you earn your first Gym Badge. Crucially, a Pokémon caught within the obedience range will remain obedient even if it levels up beyond that initial limit.

For instance, a level 20 Fletchinder caught with zero badges will obey commands even after leveling up to 21. However, a level 21 Fletchinder caught with zero badges will disobey until a badge is earned.

Disobedient Pokémon will refuse commands in auto-battles (indicated by a blue speech bubble), and may refuse moves or even self-harm in regular battles.

Gym Badges and Obedience Levels

Badge Levels

Gym Badges directly impact obedience levels. Each badge increases the level at which your Pokémon will obey by 5 levels. You can check your current obedience level on your Trainer Card (accessed via the map (Y-button) and then Profile (X-button)).

The obedience levels per badge are:

Badge No. Obedience Level
1 Level 25 or lower
2 Level 30 or lower
3 Level 35 or lower
4 Level 40 or lower
5 Level 45 or lower
6 Level 50 or lower
7 Level 55 or lower
8 All levels

The order in which you challenge Gym Leaders doesn't affect the obedience level increase. Defeating a Gym Leader grants the level increase regardless of the order.

Transferred or Traded Pokémon: Does OT Matter?

OT and Trading

In contrast to previous generations, the Original Trainer (OT) ID no longer affects obedience in Scarlet & Violet. The level of a traded Pokémon at the time of transfer determines its obedience. A level 17 Pokémon traded and subsequently leveled beyond 20 will still obey, while a level 21 Pokémon will not until a badge is earned.
