Top 10 GBA & DS Gems Now on Switch for Retro Lovers

Author: Sarah Jan 22,2025

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer GBA and DS ports exist on the Switch compared to other consoles. This list highlights ten favorites—four GBA and six DS games—found outside of the Nintendo Switch Online app. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration is still a solid experience. A fun comparison piece, and a more accessible playthrough for some. Regardless of version, Steel Empire is an enjoyable title, even for those not usually drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

The Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, but its true successor emerged on the GBA. Mega Man Zero initiates an excellent series of side-scrolling action games, though its initial presentation might feel a bit rough around the edges. Subsequent entries refine the formula, but this is the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature, justified by the distinct differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in this series see diminishing returns, the original offers ample enjoyment.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Another collection where all titles are worthwhile, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For the right mood, it's even preferred over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages replayability, and the gameplay is so engaging that grinding isn't a chore. A unique setting and hidden secrets further enhance its appeal. A top-tier third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its audience, establishing Shantae as a major gaming figure. This game occupies a unique space, originating from an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that GBA game is slated for release soon, potentially joining this list in the future.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title (its origin), this could be considered a GBA entry for list balance. Ace Attorney needs no introduction. These fun adventure games blend investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes. The blend of quirky humor and compelling narratives is a winning combination. The first game sets a high bar, although later installments are also highly regarded.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but features unique gameplay. As a ghost, you utilize your abilities to save others while uncovering the truth behind your demise. A wild ride from start to finish, deserving of more recognition. Capcom's persistence in bringing this title to new platforms is commendable.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally experienced on its original hardware. Its tight integration with the DS's capabilities makes porting challenging. However, the Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection compiles all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Each game is worth playing, but Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from replacing touch controls with traditional button controls. Nevertheless, all three DS titles in this collection are excellent.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

This franchise thrives within the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch port is a successful adaptation. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG. Etrian Odyssey III, being the largest, is a rewarding experience despite its complexities.
