Russian Checkers 8×8
In Russian Checkers, the rules are designed to challenge your strategic thinking:
- The game kicks off with White making the first move.
- All pieces move exclusively on dark squares.
- You must capture an opponent's piece if the opportunity arises.
- Captures can be made both forward and backward.
- A king can move and capture along any diagonal.
- When capturing, the Turkish strike rule applies, meaning you can only hit an opponent's piece once per move.
- If multiple captures are possible, you can choose any of them, not necessarily the one that would lead to the most captures.
- A piece that reaches the opponent's back rank is crowned a king and can immediately use king rules if possible.
A draw is declared in the following scenarios:
- If a player has pieces and three (or more) kings against one of the opponent's kings, and on the 15th move (from the establishment of the force balance), the player cannot capture the opponent's king.
- In positions where both players have kings, and the force balance hasn't changed (no captures, no new kings) for 30 moves in 4-5 piece endings, or 60 moves in 6-7 piece endings.
- If a player has three pieces (three kings, two kings and a checker, a king and two checkers, three simple checkers) against one opponent's king on the "high road," and cannot capture the king by the 5th move.
- If players move only with kings for 15 moves without moving regular pieces or making captures.
- If the same position repeats three or more times with the same player to move each time.
International Checkers 10×10
International Checkers on a 10×10 board brings a slightly different set of challenges:
- White starts the game.
- Pieces move only on dark squares.
- You must capture an opponent's piece if you can.
- Captures can be made both forward and backward.
- A king can move and capture along any diagonal.
- The Turkish strike rule applies during captures.
- The majority rule dictates that you must choose the capture that takes the most pieces if multiple options are available.
- If a regular piece reaches the opponent's back rank during a capture, it remains a regular piece until the capture ends, then it becomes a king.
- A piece that reaches the opponent's back rank by a regular move is immediately crowned a king and can only use king rules on its next move.
