Preparation for Children Going to the Hospital
"HC And - When Mother or Father Has Cancer" is a collaborative project developed by the Oncology Department R at H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, Odense University Hospital, along with hospitalized children, their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication. This resource is specifically designed as patient information for children aged 4-7 years, aiming to prepare them and reduce their anxiety about hospital-related terms and experiences that are often unfamiliar to them.
"HC And - When Mother or Father Has Cancer" serves as an introductory guide to the general cancer patient journey at the hospital, tailored for the youngest children, their families, and friends. The information is delivered through a child's voice and engaging animations, utilizing the "Learning through play with tablet/mobile phone/touch screen" genre. This approach is particularly effective for children in this age group, who learn and process information best through play and concrete examples.
As relatives of cancer patients, children can quickly become overwhelmed with information. To address this, HC And is structured into short, manageable sequences that are accessible and understandable at a child's level. This design allows even "newbies" to start their learning journey here comfortably.
The content of HC And includes seven staged stories that address common questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. These stories serve as an educational tool that hospital staff can use to establish a shared understanding with the child, facilitating better communication and support.
HC And is available for free download to everyone, ensuring that this valuable resource is accessible to all who need it.
