Mortal Kombat 1 Ends DLC and Story Updates, NetherRealm Focuses on New Project

Warner Bros. has officially confirmed what many *Mortal Kombat 1* fans had already feared: there will be no new DLC characters or story chapters released for the game following the launch of its Definitive Edition. This marks a definitive end to post-launch content support for the title, leaving players with only the existing roster and features.

To date, *Mortal Kombat 1* has sold 5 million copies globally. While this is an impressive number, it falls short when compared to its predecessor. The broader *Mortal Kombat* franchise has now surpassed 100 million units sold worldwide. *Mortal Kombat 11* quickly became the best-selling entry in the series shortly after its release, overtaking *Mortal Kombat X*, which had sold nearly 11 million units worldwide. By 2022, *Mortal Kombat 11* had surpassed 15 million copies sold—making *Mortal Kombat 1’s* performance appear weaker by comparison.

In a statement posted via the official *Mortal Kombat* social media account, Warner Bros. expressed awareness of the disappointment this news would bring to the fanbase. However, the studio explained that the development team at NetherRealm Studios must now focus on their next project to ensure it meets the high standards expected from the studio. Although no specific details were provided about the upcoming title, industry speculation suggests it could be *Injustice 3*, continuing NetherRealm’s popular DC Comics-based fighting game series.

We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.

We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.

The T-1000 guest character, released in March 2025—roughly 18 months after *Mortal Kombat 1* first launched—now stands as the final major content drop for the game. For context, NetherRealm announced the end of DLC support for *Mortal Kombat 11* two years and three months after its initial release. In contrast, today’s announcement for *Mortal Kombat 1* comes just one year and eight months post-launch.

Fans have pointed out prior assurances from NetherRealm co-founder Ed Boon, who had previously promised years of ongoing support for the title. Notably, in September 2024, Boon tweeted a message intended to calm concerns that the studio had shifted focus away from *Mortal Kombat 1*: “NetherRealm is still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.” That promise now appears to have been cut short.

What Will Be NetherRealm Studios' Next Game?

Mortal Kombat 1 experienced something of a revival in January thanks to the surprise appearance of Floyd, the pink ninja character teased by Ed Boon over several years. The community-driven event brought renewed interest and excitement to the game, offering a rare moment of engagement since launch. Still, for many core fans, the overall experience of *Mortal Kombat 1* has been underwhelming.

Despite the lack of further support for *Mortal Kombat 1*, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has reiterated its commitment to the future of the franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav stated that the company plans to focus heavily on just four key titles on the games side—one of which is *Mortal Kombat*. Additionally, the cinematic universe continues to expand, with *Mortal Kombat 2*, the sequel to the successful reboot film, set for release later this year.
