The gaming community is abuzz with excitement over the alleged details of a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, reportedly set for release in 2025. According to a leak from Mp1st, a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio, accidentally revealed that the beloved open-world RPG is being remade using Unreal Engine 5. This suggests a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple remaster. When contacted by IGN, Microsoft declined to comment on the matter.
The leaked details suggest significant gameplay changes, including modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD). Specifically, the Blocking system has been revamped with influences from action games and Soulslikes, addressing the original's perceived "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons are now more visible, damage calculations have been updated, and the difficulty of triggering a knockdown from depleted Stamina has increased. The HUD has been redesigned for better clarity, hit reactions have been added for clearer feedback, and Archery mechanics have been modernized in both first and third-person views.
Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023 when documents from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial regarding the Activision Blizzard acquisition were published. These documents listed several unannounced Bethesda games slated for release in the coming years. The list, compiled in July 2020 before Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021, included an Oblivion Remaster for financial year 2022, alongside other titles such as an Indiana Jones game. However, many of these projects have faced delays or cancellations. Doom Year Zero, for example, evolved into Doom: The Dark Ages, set to launch this year, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle did not release until December 2024.
Interestingly, the Microsoft document referred to the project as a remaster, hinting at a possible shift in scope from a remaster to a more ambitious remake. Fans eagerly await an official announcement to clarify these details.
As for the platforms, with Microsoft's current focus on multiplatform releases and the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Oblivion remake may be available on more than just PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Leaker NateTheHate has suggested a June 2025 release for the remake, which could coincide with the Switch 2's launch window.
Next week's Xbox Developer Direct, hosted by Microsoft, will feature more information on Doom: The Dark Ages from ZeniMax-owned id Software. While Microsoft has teased the reveal of a new game from a mystery developer, Jez Corden from Windows Central hinted that it's "a new entry in a legendary Japanese IP," ruling out the possibility of it being the Oblivion remake.
