Kai
Kai is your first proper Companion in Avowed, joining you early in the game at the port of Dawnshore near Paradis. He'll approach you directly on the dock, and together, you'll embark on a mission to find the Ambassador and the Cleric. Kai remains a steadfast member of your party until you recruit three or more Companions, at which point you can swap him out at a Party Camp.
As a former mercenary, Kai brings a tough exterior with a softer core to the team. In battle, he serves as a tank, absorbing and dishing out significant damage. His fire abilities are also key for clearing obstacles like cobwebs and roots, aiding in uncovering hidden paths and securing valuable loot.
Kai's upgradable abilities include:
- Fire and Ire (Active): Kai unleashes a powerful shot from his blunderbuss, causing high stun and taunting an enemy for 10 seconds.
- Unbending Defense (Active): Kai regenerates health and boosts his damage reduction by 25%.
- Leap of Daring (Active): Kai executes a mighty leap, stunning and taunting nearby enemies upon landing.
- Second Win (Passive): Upon reaching zero health, Kai revives himself, restoring 50% of his maximum health.
Marius
Marius, the second Companion you'll encounter, shares a past with Kai and can be found in Dawnshore. You'll meet him in a bar, where you can either negotiate his release from some confrontational NPCs or assist him in fighting them off.
As a skilled hunter and tracker, Marius brings a wild edge to your adventures. His Hunter Sense ability is invaluable for locating loot and crafting materials across the Living Lands. In combat, he utilizes a bow and arrow, daggers, and can manipulate nature to ensnare enemies in roots.
Marius' upgradable abilities include:
- Binding Roots (Active): Marius roots an enemy in place for 8 seconds.
- Heart Seeker (Active): Marius fires a piercing shot that always hits its target, passing through any obstacles.
- Shadow Step (Active): Marius disappears in a puff of smoke, reappearing to slash an enemy with his daggers up to 3 times.
- Wounding Shots (Passive): Marius' attacks cause bleeding.

Giatta
Giatta, the third Companion you'll recruit, joins later in the main quest at the Fior settlement in the Emerald Stair Region. As an animancer, she wields a form of magic that's controversial within the Living Lands.
Giatta plays a crucial role in deciphering the spiritual enigmas of Avowed's Main Quest. In combat, her abilities lean towards support, healing, shielding, and buffing allies. Although not a heavy hitter herself, her Spectral Jolt ability is essential for powering Essence Generators, which can unlock new exploration paths and hidden treasures.
Giatta's upgradable abilities include:
- Purification (Active): Giatta releases a wave of energy, healing all allies by 25% of their maximum health.
- Barrier (Active): Giatta grants all allies a shield, providing temporary health for 20 seconds.
- Acceleration (Active): Giatta boosts the movement and attack speed of all allies for 15 seconds.
- Reconstruction (Passive): Giatta's attacks heal all allies by a small amount.
Yatzli
Yatzli, the fourth and final Companion, joins your party during a main quest in the Shatterscarp region within the city of Thirdborn, though you may encounter her earlier in the game.
A master of magic, Yatzli focuses on dealing damage. Her spells are versatile, capable of targeting single enemies or controlling crowds. Like Giatta, she can also use her magic to clear obstacles, making her invaluable for exploration in the Living Lands.
Yatzli's upgradable abilities include:
- Essence Explosion (Active): Yatzli unleashes an arcane explosion upon contact with an enemy, releasing Essence and causing significant damage.
- Minoletta’s Missile Battery (Active): Yatzli launches a barrage of arcane missiles that seek out nearby enemies.
- Arduos Delay of Motion (Active): Yatzli manipulates arcane energy to slow an enemy for 10 seconds.
- Blast (Passive): Yatzli's attacks create a small area of effect upon impact.
And that concludes the list of all the recruitable Companions in Avowed.
