In a surprising turn of events, the free-to-play 3v3 shooter *Spectre Divide* is set to shut down just six months after its debut in September 2024. This announcement comes mere weeks after its expansion to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Mountaintop Studios, the game's developer, will also be closing its doors.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed this unfortunate news via a social media statement, revealing that the game's Season 1 launch did not meet the necessary success to sustain operations. "Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat," Mitchell stated.

The team had high hopes initially, with the game attracting around 400,000 players in its first week, peaking at 10,000 concurrent users across all platforms. However, Mitchell's post continued, "But as time has gone on, we haven’t seen enough active players and incoming revenue to cover the day-to-day costs of Spectre and the studio. Since the PC launch, we stretched our remaining capital as far as we could, but at this point, we’re out of funding to support the game."
The studio explored all possible avenues to continue, including seeking a publisher, additional investment, and potential acquisition, but to no avail. Mitchell acknowledged the challenging state of the gaming industry, stating, "The industry is in a tough spot right now."
*Spectre Divide* will cease operations within the next 30 days, and Mountaintop Studios has committed to refunding any money spent by players since the Season 1 launch.
This news starkly contrasts earlier statements from October 2024, where Mitchell assured that *Spectre Divide* "isn’t going anywhere," and affirmed that Mountaintop had "the funds to support Spectre for a long time."
IGN’s August 2024 preview praised *Spectre Divide* for its innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters during matches, highlighting its potential as a tactical 3v3 shooter. However, the swift closure of *Spectre Divide* mirrors the struggles faced by other live-service games such as Rocksteady’s *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and Sony’s *Concord*.
