Hyper Light Breaker offers players a rich selection of characters, known as Breakers, each with distinct playstyles essential for battling the formidable Abyss King. Unlocking these new characters is straightforward, yet the game does not explicitly detail the process, so here's a comprehensive guide on how to unlock and understand the characters in the game's early access version, which currently features only two unlockable characters.
How to Get New Characters in Hyper Light Breaker
To unlock new characters, you'll need Abyss Stones, which are exclusive drops from defeating the Crowns, the game's bosses. To reach these bosses, you must first collect Prisms, which serve as keys to the boss arenas. You can locate Prisms on the map by following the golden diamond icon.
After defeating a Crown, return to the Cursed Outpost via the teleporter, and choose the Breaker you wish to unlock. Use your Abyss Stones to unlock the selected character, making them playable. Although there are nine characters in total, only two can be unlocked at this stage. The unlocking method for future characters remains undisclosed.
All Characters in Hyper Light Breaker
Each character in Hyper Light Breaker starts with a SyCom, a crucial item that shapes their base stats and core perk, influencing their unique playstyle. Here's a detailed look at the characters and their playstyles:
Vermillion
Vermillion is the initial character you'll encounter, equipped with the Gunslinger SyCom, which enhances ranged combat capabilities. His Rail shots guarantee a follow-up critical hit after a crit. For those favoring melee combat, the unlockable Tank SyCom rewards perfect parries with increased armor, offering better defensive and melee stats for a safer playstyle.
Lapis
Lapis starts with the Lightweaver SyCom, which boosts Rail shot damage after picking up a Battery. Her standout feature is the Warrior SyCom, which amplifies her core stats with each upgrade, making her a formidable force in the long run. Lapis excels with both SyComs but becomes especially powerful with Warrior, potentially outshining other Breakers in raw stats.
Goro
Goro is designed for ranged combat with his default Astrologer SyCom, which speeds up Blade skill charging while shooting. His unlockable Sniper SyCom directly increases his critical hit rate. Goro embodies the high-risk, high-reward archetype of a ranged glass cannon, offering greater damage potential than Vermillion and Lapis but lacking defensive capabilities. Mastery of Goro can lead to highly effective combat performance.
