Jack Wall on ME3 Absence: That's the Deal

Author: Henry Oct 12,2025

Composer Jack Wall has opened up about his absence from Mass Effect 3 after crafting the beloved scores for the first two games in the series.

Wall collaborated with developer BioWare to produce the '80s-inspired sci-fi soundtracks for 2007's Mass Effect and its 2010 sequel. Mass Effect 2 is frequently praised as one of the greatest action RPGs ever made, with Wall's score - particularly the epic 'Suicide Mission' track - standing as a pinnacle of the franchise.

However, Wall's unexpected departure before 2012's Mass Effect 3 shocked fans. In a recent Guardian interview, he attributed this to tensions with then-development lead Casey Hudson.

"Casey wasn't particularly satisfied with me in the end," Wall revealed. "But I take great pride in that score. The BAFTA nomination and its reception... [even if] it didn't meet Casey's full expectations."

While The Guardian suggested creative differences between them, Wall remained diplomatic. "These creative disputes happen in the industry," he noted. "It was one of few such experiences in my career - challenging, but ultimately just part of the process."

Wall provided additional context regarding the intense development of Mass Effect 2 and its iconic final mission sequence, which may shed light on his working relationship with Hudson.

"The most mentally exhausting creative challenge of my career," Wall described. "With everyone focused on finishing the game, I had to figure it out alone. The team performed miracles implementing my work... resulting in one of gaming's most memorable finales. The effort was absolutely worthwhile."

Following Mass Effect 2, Wall transitioned to scoring Call of Duty titles, including the recent Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare continues development on the next Mass Effect following Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The studio has yet to announce the new game's composer.
