Nintendo's recent unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 has sparked considerable fan discussion, particularly regarding Donkey Kong's noticeably revamped design. The character's appearance seems heavily influenced by his portrayal in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The trailer showcased numerous characters, most appearing consistent with their established designs. However, Donkey Kong's updated look stands out significantly. His design has remained largely unchanged for years, consistently featured in titles such as Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. The movie's successful reimagining of the character appears to have inspired this game update.

While the Mario Kart 9 trailer offered only fleeting glimpses of Donkey Kong, the differences in his design are already apparent. A more detailed comparison will be possible following the anticipated April Nintendo Direct showcasing the Nintendo Switch 2. This event will likely provide a closer look at the game and its characters. The console reveal trailer primarily focused on the Switch 2's aesthetics, confirming backward compatibility, a new Joy-Con button, and the controller's potential use as a mouse.

Despite a 2025 release window, the Nintendo Switch 2 is unlikely to launch before June. This is due to numerous planned hands-on events around the globe, with registration opening imminently.
