Dune: Awakening Devs Detail Sandworm Mechanics

Author: Patrick Jun 20,2025

In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms play a crucial role as a natural, unpredictable force within the game world. Unlike in Frank Herbert’s original novels—where characters could summon these colossal creatures using a thumper device—the game does not allow players to call upon worms at will.

According to the development team, sandworms are designed as advanced NPCs with their own behaviors, patrol routes, and schedules embedded into the game engine. Players cannot directly summon a worm to disrupt enemy bases or gain tactical advantages. However, if a worm is already in the vicinity, certain player actions—like moving rapidly across the dunes or using a thumper—might draw its attention. Even then, there's no guarantee that the worm will appear or react as expected, adding an element of unpredictability to encounters.

One notable omission from the source material is the absence of worm riding, a feature deeply associated with the Fremen culture in the Dune universe. The developers have stated that pressure from the filmmakers behind the modern Dune cinematic adaptations played a role in this decision. That said, future post-launch updates may introduce additional Fremen-related content, potentially including mechanics tied to worm riding. For now, however, this iconic experience remains absent at launch.
