Italian developer 3DClouds has unveiled Formula Legends, an arcade-style open-wheel racer inspired by Art of Rally that celebrates over five decades of Formula 1 history (through unlicensed tributes).
After getting an exclusive preview from IGN, it's clear that while aspects like AI behavior still need refinement, the studio's dedication to authentically capturing different F1 eras is already remarkable.
The game will showcase 16 distinct car models featuring seven alternate liveries each. Though stylized with chunky, toy-like proportions, these vehicles unmistakably pay homage to legendary racing designs through inspired off-brand interpretations. Authentic engine sounds have been prioritized - particularly crucial for recreating classic F1 cars' distinctive roars. The inclusion of mod support for liveries, helmets, and trackside sponsors adds exciting customization potential.
The 14 racetracks will each offer era-specific variations spanning from the 1970s to modern day, with layouts evolving to reflect real-world circuit changes.
Formula Legends' career mode shows particular promise, structuring championships around iconic periods in F1's high-octane history.
Racing systems will incorporate surprising depth. Beyond 200 drivers (including amusingly named standouts like Mike Shoemaker) possessing unique skill perks, variables like tire degradation, fuel strategy, dynamic rubbered-in racing lines, mechanical damage, and changing weather conditions will all impact races. How 3DClouds balances these simulation elements with approachable arcade handling remains an intriguing design challenge.

Producer Francesco Mantovani explained they drew inspiration from New Star GP (2023's F1-themed retro racer) but aimed for a more grounded experience than pure arcade-style gameplay.
"We positioned Formula Legends between New Star GP and Art of Rally gameplay-wise," Mantovani noted. "Art of Rally's camera work and track design particularly influenced our approach."
While 3DClouds' portfolio previously focused on licensed kids' racers (including Paw Patrol and Hot Wheels titles), the team describes Formula Legends as a labor of love developed independently without publisher constraints.
"This is the game they've dreamed of making for years," explained executive producer Roberta Migliori. "Our contract work finally provided the resources, and with F1's growing popularity, the timing felt perfect. The project is entirely self-funded through our other game revenues."
The studio's Milan headquarters - just miles from Monza, F1's historic "Temple of Speed" - undoubtedly fuels their motorsport passion.
Formula Legends arrives later this year on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Switch. While Switch 2 dev kits aren't currently available, Migliori confirmed they'll "explore that platform when development allows."
