Following a DMCA takedown of the popular Bloodborne 60fps mod last week, Lilith Walther, creator of the impressive Bloodborne PSX demake, reported a copyright claim on a YouTube video showcasing their work. The claim originated from MarkScan Enforcement, a company confirmed by modder Lance McDonald to be acting on behalf of Sony. This is the same company that issued the DMCA for McDonald's 60fps patch.
McDonald speculates that Sony's actions might be a preemptive measure to clear the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster. The theory suggests that removing fan-made content relating to "Bloodborne 60fps" and "Bloodborne remake" would prevent trademark conflicts should Sony officially pursue such projects.
The situation highlights the ongoing frustration surrounding Bloodborne's lack of official support on newer hardware. While fans have achieved impressive 60fps gameplay through PS4 emulation, Sony's response suggests a reluctance to engage with the community's efforts. Sony has yet to comment publicly on the matter.
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered a personal theory, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's strong attachment to Bloodborne and his busy schedule prevent him from overseeing any remasters or updates, and that Sony respects his wishes.
Despite Miyazaki's past comments acknowledging the game's potential for a modern hardware release and FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership, Bloodborne remains largely untouched nearly a decade after its initial release. The ongoing legal actions against fan projects, however, leave the possibility of an official update or remake open to speculation.
