"Ex-Bethesda Dev Anticipates Fallout 3 Remaster to Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat"

Author: Camila May 15,2025

With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda title might be next in line for a remaster. Rumors suggest that Fallout 3 could be the next game to receive this treatment, especially after a leak in 2023. If Fallout 3 is indeed remastered, what enhancements could Bethesda implement to improve upon the 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?

Bruce Nesmith, a designer on Fallout 3, has highlighted the game's "not good" gun combat as an area ripe for improvement. Speaking to VideoGamer, Nesmith expressed his belief that a remastered version would feature shooting mechanics more aligned with those in Fallout 4. He noted, "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3." Nesmith praised the significant efforts made in Fallout 4 to enhance gun combat, acknowledging that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first foray into a shooter-style game.

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by remake experts Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, set a high standard with numerous visual and gameplay improvements. The remaster boasts 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, alongside meaningful enhancements to leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. It also introduces new dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received, with some fans suggesting that Oblivion Remastered is more akin to a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified their decision to opt for a remaster over a full remake.

Nesmith suggested that Fallout 3 Remastered could see similar enhancements to those in Oblivion Remastered. He emphasized that Fallout 3's combat did not compare favorably to other shooters of its time, stating, "Also, it’s an RPG shooter, it’s not a run-and-gun shooter. But a lot of work was done on that for Fallout 4. So I anticipate seeing a lot of that work go into it, assuming they’re doing the same thing." He further remarked on Oblivion Remastered, saying it was not merely updated to the level of Skyrim but rather to a standard that visually surpasses the most recent Skyrim graphics update. Nesmith went so far as to call Oblivion Remastered "Oblivion 2.0."

Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing updates for Fallout 76, and the Fallout TV show, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. With such a packed schedule, fans can look forward to a variety of engaging content in the coming years.
