"Nintendo Switch 2 to Support VRR Exclusively in Handheld Mode"

Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 noticed a mention of variable refresh rate (VRR) on informational pages about the system, which quickly vanished. Nintendo has now clarified the situation regarding VRR functionality on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error."

When asked about potential VRR support for docked mode in a future firmware update, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

This means that while the Switch 2 will support VRR in handheld mode, users playing on a TV will not have access to this feature at launch. The clarification comes after confusion sparked by the brief appearance and subsequent removal of VRR mentions, as tracked by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.

Although this may disappoint those eager for VRR support in docked mode at launch, there remains hope for future updates. Sony previously introduced VRR support to PS5 consoles post-launch, suggesting that a similar update could be possible for the Switch 2.

In other Nintendo Switch 2 news, the company has announced a list of games receiving free performance upgrades, including Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has assured that there will be sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
